He produces stories such as “Guts” that causes people to faint at readings due to the graphic description of a colon being pulled from a body through a pool drain.

Fight Club was his debut novel and took a lot of convincing to be published. He was once again rejected, so he wrote darker. His first attempt at a novel was rejected, then he wrote darker. He attended a workshop hosted by Tom Spanbauer, “minimalist guru behind the art of “Dangerous Writing.”” (Chaplinsky). However, it wasn’t until his mid-thirties that he decided he wanted to write fiction. A lot of Palahniuk’s experiences in the Cacophony Society show up within his writing (Rugh, 2014). These people are the source of Santa Rampage and Burning Man. Members would come up with adventures, pranks, or stunts, put it in a newsletter, and people would show up. The “Suicide Club” expanded from San Francisco to Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles and because the Cacophony Society. The group was created in the 1970s and was based off of the short story “The Suicide Club” by Robert Lewis Stevenson where the characters in the story realize death is inevitable and do dangerous, risky things. This was the basis for The Mayhem Project in Fight Club. The Cacophony Society did things outside the mainstream like pulling public large-scale pranks. He worked on trucks and wrote technical manuals, but during this time he joined The Cacophony Society (Chaplinsky). He worked for a Portland newspaper for a short time before turning his interest towards diesel mechanics. He then went on to graduate from the University of Oregon in 1986 with a BA in journalism. In 1980 he graduated from high school winning the award for “Most Wittiest”. His parents divorced when he was fourteen and he spent much of his time with his siblings on his mother’s parents’ cattle ranch.

There are writers of the strange-the cult writers-that shock and enthrall an audience in a distinct vision. Whether through style, word choice, or ideas a writer is so phenomenal, outspoken, different, and creator of an individual voice. Through time writers make themselves known.
